Sports: Rohr holds first training session ahead Super Eagles' friendly games

The training session held at The Hive (home ground of Barnet Football Club) in London.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria yesterday, March 21 held their first training session ahead of their friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso.

 
The Super Eagles of Nigeria face Senegal and Burkina Faso on Thursday, March 23 and Monday, March 27 respectively in London.

Ahead of the friendly games, the Super Eagles camp opened on Monday, March 20 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in London.
The training session, which is the only one for the day held at The Hive (home ground of Barnet Football Club), London where both friendly games will be played.

“First training session done.The future is bright for our football .Too many talent here,” midfielder John Ogu wrote on Twitter.
“Always good to be back with the team, everyone looking sharp and fit this morning,” Kelechi Iheanacho wrote.
Currently in camp are Chidozie Awaziem, Isaac Success, Ogenyi Onazi, Carl Ikeme, Bazee Noah, Alex Iwobi, Simon Moses, Wilfred Ndidi, Shehu Abdullahi, Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho, Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Moses Simon, Wilfred Ndidi, Ahmed Musa, Tyrone Ebuhehi, John Ogu, and Kenneth Omeruo.

Chelsea star Victor Moses has returned home because of a calf injury.
He joined his international teammates at the hotel on Monday but returned home the following day after the Super Eagles medical team confirmed the injury.

Serena Williams tops sister Venus at Australian Open to win record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title

In 1998, two teenage tennis phenoms from Compton, Calif., met for the first time on the pro tour, in the second round at the Australian Open. Beads in their hair and braces on their teeth, the oft-talked about sisters stood ready to take the tennis world by storm.
But few could have predicted the spectacular journey that lay ahead of Serena and Venus Williams, one that spanned nearly two decades and and brought them back to Melbourne, competing in their ninth Grand Slam final, with Serena cementing herself as the most decorated player, male or female, in the Open era by besting her older sister 6-4, 6-4.
The enormity of the moment was not lost on either sister. Saturday’s match opened with four consecutive breaks of serve as the duo worked out their respective nerves, Serena trying to capture her record-breaking title, and Venus attempting to raise a major trophy for the first time since 2008. It took until the fifth game for Serena Williams to find her groove in her serve and rally to win the opener 6-4.
Venus Williams, coming off of a draining, come-from-behind, three-set win over CoCo Vandeweghe, held to open the second set and then fought back triple break point at 1-1 to keep herself within striking distance. In the seventh game, though, Serena Williams got the pivotal break to put herself closer to history. Still, Venus Williams conceded nothing to her little sister, fighting to hold at 3-5 and staying aggressive as Serena Williams tried to serve for the set. Eventually, the little sister pulled through to win her long-coveted 23rd major title.
Saturday’s title was Serena Williams’ 10th major championship won over the age of 30. By comparison, Steffi Graf won her final Grand Slam at age 29. The win also ensures that Serena Williams will retake her spot at the top of the WTA rankings.
As Serena Williams dropped to the ground in celebration of a lifelong goal, she was a long way from the courts of Compton, but not far from the best friend and support system that has been there through it all.
“There’s no way I would be here at 23 without her,” Serena Williams said of her sister. “There’s no way I would be at one without her. She’s the only reason that I’m standing here today. She’s the only reason that the Williams sisters exist.”

Mikel scores in China, club looses.

John Obi Mikel opened his Tianjin TEDA account as they crumbled 6-2 to St. Pauli FC on Saturday.
The signing of Mikel, coupled with other arrivals in Jaime Pacheco’s squad were meant to strengthen the squad after a poor outing last season, but they bowed to 2-1 to Borussia Mönchengladbach in their pre-season outing.
Against the German second division outfit, they continued their losing streak but the 29-year-old gave a glimpse of his stellar quality when he headed in a free kick to reduce the deficit for his team who were three goals down.
Despite the heavy defeat, Mikel will be heavily tipped to enjoy a fine season with the Chinese Super League, having impressed for Chelsea last term before the arrival of manager Antonio Conte.

Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho were involved in a heated touchline exchange after the Liverpool manager felt his Manchester United counterpart was trying to get Roberto Firmino sent off at Old Trafford.
Firmino was booked for shoving Ander Herrera to the ground after the Liverpool forward reacted angrily to having his shirt pulled back by the United midfielder in stoppage time.
Mourinho remonstrated with Craig Pawson, the fourth official, which prompted Klopp – who described it as a “wild game” - to intervene. Klopp had earlier been left frustrated by referee Michael Oliver’s failure to book Wayne Rooney when the United striker caught James Milner on the ankle with his studs.
“He [Klopp] thought I was asking for his player to be sent off,” Mourinho said. “I wasn’t. There was no problem at all.”
Klopp was frustrated Firmino was punished. “He [Mourinho] wanted the minimum of a yellow card, I don’t know,” the German said.

“I think the ref whistled before anything else happened. Roberto is a footballer from head to toe and he wanted to stay in the game. He could have passed the ball but that was a yellow card for Herrera and nothing else.
“In the end it was a yellow card for the guy who wanted to play football. It could have been even worse if someone wants to see it again and all that stuff. We [Mourinho and I] could not have the same opinion in this moment.”
Klopp had appeared slightly put out before the game started that there was no coffee available to drink and that Liverpool had not been given much of a welcome in United’s official matchday programme.
“I read the programme notes and it is the first time that there was nothing about ‘welcome to Liverpool’ or something like this,” he said, only half in jest. “That’s the first thing. Then I wanted a coffee and in the can was only tea. It’s started already, yeah? It’s all OK. It’s football.”
Zlatan Ibrahimovic claimed an equaliser six minutes from time with his 13th goal in as many games but felt United got their tactics wrong in the first half.

“We weren’t on the top of our game,” the United striker said. “We played the wrong way in first half - too many mistakes in our build up so we went more direct in the second half We would like to win to close gap but it’s OK as we still haven’t lost. It was a hard fight.”
Klopp said “the ball was 25 minutes in the air” and claimed his players faced a tough challenge physically. “A lot of people before the game would have thought we would get a knock today because United look like a rolling beetle and everything goes in their direction,” Klopp said.
“We needed to be brave, we created the spaces we wanted, we scored the goal. In the end period of the game when United started playing long balls - Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - after 80 minutes of high intense football it is really hard. They play long balls, it was a wild game.”

Mourinho felt United had been unfairly criticised for being too defensive in the goalless draw at Anfield in October and argued that it was Liverpool who did most of the defending here. 
“We changed the qualities of our game and went to a more direct approach because Liverpool were defending with so many bodies behind the ball,” Mourinho said.
“In the end we put pressure on them, we equalised and I think, with a few more minutes, we were closer to wining because they were under real pressure and our team was so strong mentally and emotionally. It’s good to see that Liverpool can also play defensively. On the counter-attack they were always dangerous and threatening.
"Liverpool are a team that always press the ball very well. I think we deserved more but the point is something everyone must accept.”

The Cherries raced into a 3-0 lead but goals from Alexis Sanchez, Lucas Perez and Olivier Giroud completed a remarkable comeback for the Gunners on Tuesday

Arsenal produced an incredible comeback to seal a 3-3 draw at Bournemouth on Tuesday that could keep their Premier League title hopes alive.

The Gunners produced a dismal display for the first hour against a spirited Bournemouth, who took the lead through Charlie Daniels' composed finish as Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere watched on from the stands.

Callum Wilson - whose penalty in the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium was Bournemouth's first competitive goal against Arsenal - doubled the advantage from the spot before half-time and Ryan Fraser made it 3-0 prior to the hour mark.

Arsenal, who were without the ill Mesut Ozil, gave themselves hope through Alexis Sanchez and Lucas Perez before Olivier Giroud headed home in injury time after Bournemouth had seen Simon Francis sent off.

The draw moves Arsenal to within eight points of leaders Chelsea, but they will drop out of the top four if rivals Tottenham beat Antonio Conte's side on Wednesday.

The leaders themselves could move 11 points clear of Arsene Wenger's men with a win over Spurs - a gap that would leave even the most optimistic of Arsenal fans fearing a 13th season without a title win.

Petr Cech was the busiest man in a positive opening spell from Bournemouth, with the Gunners goalkeeper saving a speculative effort from Junior Stanislas before just making enough contact on a through ball to deny Wilson a run at goal or a penalty shout.

But there was nothing Cech could do to stop the home side taking the lead after 16 minutes. Stanislas fired a long pass to Daniels on the left flank and the full-back skipped inside a challenge from the sleeping Hector Bellerin before side-footing home at the near post.

It got worse for Arsenal four minutes later, as Granit Xhaka shoved Fraser to ground inside the area on a Bournemouth break, allowing Wilson to sweep the ball down the middle and into the net from the penalty spot.

Aaron Ramsey, starting in the number 10 role in place of Ozil, flashed a shot wide on the turn, but Arsenal struggled to cause any undue problems for Artur Boruc and the Bournemouth defence.

Indeed, it almost got worse for the Gunners before the break, with Stanislas bending a shot inches wide of Cech's left-hand post from 20 yards in stoppage time at the end of the half.

Arsenal turned up the pressure early in the second half, but they thought they were 3-0 down after 55 minutes, only for referee Michael Oliver to award a handball in their favour after Wilson diverted Harry Arter's shot into the net with his arm.

But Bournemouth only needed another two minutes to send the Vitality Stadium into dreamland. Fraser chased down a long ball with Bellerin before nudging the defender to the ground, striding into the area from the left and slotting low past Cech and into the bottom corner.

However, things soon unravelled for the home side. Sanchez dived to nod Giroud's header across goal into the net and give the Gunners a glimmer of a comeback with 20 minutes to play, before Lucas volleyed in expertly from a tight angle five minutes later to leave home fans fearing the worst.

Bournemouth lost Francis to a straight red card in the closing stages for a lunge on Ramsey and Arsenal made their superior numbers count, with Giroud glancing Xhaka's cross from the right into the bottom corner to salvage a draw.
